One of the biggest misconceptions about urology is that it’s only about elderly men and prostates. In reality, urologists treat a wide range of conditions affecting both men and women — and many women suffer in silence with urinary symptoms for far longer than they need to.
Recurrent infections, leaking urine, urgency, and bladder pain are often seen as a normal part of life — something linked to childbirth, hormones, or simply ageing. But these symptoms are not something you should simply accept. They affect your quality of life, and they deserve proper, specialist attention.
At The Canmore Clinic, we offer private women’s urology consultations led by Mr Ben Dreyer, Consultant Urologist. You’ll be seen in a private, supportive setting where you can discuss your symptoms openly, without embarrassment, and receive a thorough, expert assessment.
There is a huge amount that can be done — with medication and without — to help you regain control of your symptoms. The first step is simply coming forward.
Our women’s urology consultations cover a range of conditions that are often under-investigated or under-treated. You don’t need a GP referral — simply book directly if you’re experiencing any of the following:
Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
If you’re experiencing more than one or two infections a year, this can be considered abnormal and warrants further investigation or specialist advice. You shouldn’t have to keep managing repeated courses of antibiotics without understanding the underlying cause.
Urinary Incontinence
Whether it’s stress incontinence (leaking when you cough, laugh, or exercise), urge incontinence (a sudden, overwhelming need to go), or a combination of both — incontinence is not a condition you need to live with. Treatments range from pelvic floor strategies to medication and onward referral for specialist procedures.
Overactive Bladder
Urgency, frequency, and the constant need to know where the nearest toilet is — overactive bladder significantly impacts daily life, yet many women see it as normal. It’s not. There are effective treatments available.
Bladder Pain Syndrome
Persistent bladder discomfort or pelvic pain that isn’t explained by infection. This can be assessed and managed with a tailored approach.
Blood in the Urine (Haematuria)
Seeing blood in your urine is always abnormal and should be investigated promptly, regardless of your age or other symptoms.
Post-Childbirth Urinary Symptoms
Childbirth can cause lasting changes to bladder function and pelvic floor strength. If you’ve been living with symptoms since giving birth — even years ago — it’s not too late to seek help.
Because urinary symptoms in women are rarely linked to cancer, they don’t always receive the same publicity or urgency as other conditions. Many women feel their symptoms aren’t “serious enough” to warrant a specialist appointment, or that they should simply manage them quietly.
But as Mr Dreyer puts it: if it’s affecting your quality of life, it’s important — and it deserves the attention it deserves.
The sooner we know about a problem, the more we can do about it. Early assessment often means simpler, more effective treatment options. And even if your symptoms are mild, a specialist consultation can give you clarity about what’s happening, what’s likely to change, and what you can do about it — now and in the future.
You don’t have to wait until symptoms are severe. You don’t have to feel embarrassed. And you certainly don’t have to feel like you’re wasting anyone’s time.
Your consultation is a private, unhurried appointment with Mr Ben Dreyer, Consultant Urologist. There are no rushed GP-style appointments and no waiting months to see a specialist.
Here’s what your visit will typically involve:
If further investigation or specialist treatment is needed beyond what we offer locally, we’ll discuss your options clearly and guide you through the referral process — whether that’s through the NHS, regional private services, or specialist centres.
You’ll leave with clarity, not uncertainty.
